Mormonism 101 at the Palms-Rancho Park Library

November 6, 2007
6:30 pmto7:30 pm

Thought I would post this information about a public forum on the basic beliefs of Mormons being held next Tuesday.

“Mormonism 101″

Keith Atkinson, International Director of Public Affairs, North America West Area, for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will be speaking and taking Q&A at an informational forum on the basic beliefs of Mormons on Tuesday, November 6th, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at the Los Angeles Palms-Rancho Park Branch Public Library (2029 Overland Ave., at Interstate-10 and Overland), in the Ray Bradbury Room.  Members of the community at-large will have the opportunity to learn basic tenets and the history of the Mormon religion, as well as have their questions answered about this peculiar faith which is seeing increased noteriety in light of current events involving prominent LDS public figures as well as increased media attention being paid to other popular issues affecting Latter-day Saints.  As this event is for the general public, it is strongly encouraged that any Latter-day Saints interested in attending bring a non-Mormon friend, as this event will be most beneficial and worthwhile to folks who are not LDS; otherwise Latter-day Saints are discouraged from attending.

Sounds like a great event for non-Mormons!  Spread the word!

Please save your old cartridges and ask your friends, business associates and others to save their cartridges for this worthy project.

Really Don’t Forget: Palms Block Party and Woodbine Street Tree Planting this Saturday!

April 28, 2007

Ok, I guess it’s official title is “Woodbine Street Tree-Planting” but this event is actually a Palms Neighborhood-wide block party, too.  It will be taking place at the 10700th block of Woodbine between Overland and Glendon, 10711 Woodbine Street, Los Angeles, CA.  Here are some more details from the evite I got:

As for the Block Party, we have a ton of fun things planned. We will have music, yard sales, relay races, interactive neighbor meeting activities, raffle prizes, pie eating contests, a bouncer, children’s arts and crafts area and more!!

8:45 - 12:00 - Tree Planting
11:30 - 3:00 - Block Party
12:30 - Representative’s Speeches
1:00 - Doggie Parade

This event is supported by TreePeople, LADWP, The Mayor’s Office, The Office of Councilman Jack Weiss, Palms Neighborhood Council, Mar Vista Community Council and Nike Corp.

I fully support any efforts to enliven the Palms community, and this sounds like it could be lots of fun for locals.  Come out and support a great LA community and have fun helping to beautify LA and save the environment!

Block Party in Palms!

Thursday, March 1st, 2007 by Wardfriends|Admin | email author
April 28, 2007

Dude, I am very excited about all the coolness my neighborhood seems to be emitting these days. I just learned that some really cool and outgoing folks right here in Palms are organizing a block party and tree-planting, and everyone is invited. From the announcement at the Palms-Village Sun:

Dear Neighbors,

My name is Marina, and I live at 10711 Woodbine Street. I would like to invite all of you to participate in a street festival that I am organizing with a couple other neighbors. We are not part of any organization, we are just a bunch of people who live on Woodbine and other streets of Palms. We are calling our event the Palms Neighborhood Block Party. We are planning it for Sat, April 28th. (That is the same weekend as the Mayor’s Big Sunday Weekend). We are a small committee right now and could use some more leaders/volunteers.

The reason being is this, we have just acquire about 20 trees from the organization Tree People (for Woodbine specifically) and they are about to offer me more for this event (to plant as a community on that day). Tree People mentioned Lawler and Rose. I get the feeling that this is up for negotiation. I am also about to be offerred 100 volunteers from Disney who have decided that they are interested in helping out with just this kind of event (part of Mayor’s Big Sunday).

We are trying to organize folks here on Woodbine, but would be happy to include more people. Specifically, we need help going door to door to invite people toparticipate in the planning and to volunteer. This is a huge task and we need more bodies. Please feel free to email me if you are interested in participating in ANY WAY. Or feel free to call me at 310.729.4619.

Any asisstance in this would be greatly appreciated. We are having a car and doggie wash on March 10 from 10-3 to start fundraising (10711 Woodbine). Let me know if you’d like to volunteer or sell pre-sale tickets!

I hope everyone and everyone comes. A few months back we had a little house party for all the Mormon posse in Palms, now we can get that same group together and party with everyone else in our neighborhood.

An Evangelical and a Latter-day Saint in Dialogue

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007 by Wardfriends|Admin | email author
March 2, 2007
7:00 pmto9:00 pm

This Friday, find out: Are Mormons Christians?

Actual title: An Evangelical and a Latter-Day Saint in Dialogue

Host: LDSSA, J. Reuben Clark Law Society of USC

Date: Friday, March 2, 2007

Time: 7:00pm - 9:00pm

Location: USC campus, Trousdale Pkwy., THH 101 (That’s Taper Hall of Humanities for you non-USC familiar types)

Reverend Gregory Johnson, ordained Baptist minister, and Dr. Robert L. Millet, Professor of Religion at Brigham Young University, will share their backgrounds and experiences in friendship and outreach, while maintaining commitment to their own faith. This program extends a model of how we can gain greater understanding and more effectively communicate in the face of theological differences.

Special thanks to Allana, a BRUIN, for the heads up.  Why haven’t any of you Trojans mentioned this?  Come on, guys.

Today’s Latest:

Veterans for Peace have erected “Arlington West” at the beach in Santa Monica. I don’t know how long it will be around, but this is the third year they’ve done this.

For Valentines some kids had a contest where they wrote like one-hundred thousand gajillion zillion love letters or something.

Want to check out some Paint-By-Numbers art akin to that seen on last week’s Office?
